Project Overview
Aim – Ground soiling protection and anti-graffiti treatment for granite sets.
Result – 12 months on: chewing gum and graffiti free!
A significant project associated with the Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 was the complete total refurbishment of this public open space, part of an increasingly popular tourist area on the south bank, attracting 25m visits a year.
Frost landscaping carried out all works on the project as designed by West 8 landscape architects. After approaching a number of companies to put forward appropriate products to protect and clean the significant 4000m2 of new granite paving and seating, Vulcaseal was approved as having the most suited product range.
Vulcaseal v286, a zero voc, water borne surface protection treatment, gave full water and oil repellency properties to the granite surfaces without changing its aesthetics, colour or appearance, but was still breathable. This has enabled subsequent daily cleaning to ensure no chewing gum or soiling was not able to be removed as easy as washing a car, giving significant savings to the public realm cleansing division. In addition it was necessary to demonstrate to the architects that graffiti would be easily removed, and a 12 second removal of typical tags was achieved.
Close inspections 12 months after completion of works there are no signs of either graffiti or chewing gum, and the Vulcaseal v286 treatment requires no further re-application for at least 8years. Vulcaseal v286 offers the ‘best in class’ non-film forming protection to all porous building materials, especially natural stone, concrete, terracotta and clay.
Whether internal or external, façade roof or flooring this versatile and easy to use Vulcaseal v286 is as near perfect solution for protection against ‘freeze-thaw’ issues and all types of staining, particularly fast-food soiling, chewing-gum, coffee, tea, beer and cola type drink spills.

Case Study
Berkeley CourtProject Overview
One of the most high profile locations in London, this Art Deco style early 1930’s listed building has undertaken a major facelift during 2012 and 2013. Situated at the junction of Baker Street and Marylebone Road Berkeley Court is a most desirable Residential address, but after 80 years of suffering the combination of weather together with city pollution it was decided the face was looking ‘tired and grubby’, although structurally sound. The building also boasts a magnificent roof garden, enjoyed by residents with superb views across the capital.
The first task was to wash the Portland Stone and Brick facades, and Vulcaseal had been approached to recommend an appropriate protection for both the brick and Portland Stone once the cleaning had been completed, and Vulcaseal V286 came with all the right credentials, namely a water-based, 0.00% VOC, non-toxic surface impregnation treatment that did not change the colour or aesthetics of either surface whilst still allowing the structure to breathe.
At higher levels there was full protection against water ingress, thus preventing freeze-thaw issues, reducing thermal loss (very low Sd value) and retarding organic growth. Oil repellency properties gave long lasting protection against urban pollutants and at street level there was an additional benefit of ensuring any graffiti that appeared would be easy to remove.
The South facing Marylebone Road elevation was completed just before the Olympic Games commenced in 2012, followed during spring and Summer of 2013 the Baker Street and north elevations.
Vulcaseal V286 has the exceptional property of not being a film forming coating, and works by lowering the surface energy of the treated surface so low that it delivers long term stain and water repellency, well in excess of 10 years. In recent decades there has been a tendency to be wary of treating and protecting cleaned surfaces, but whether natural stone, brick or concrete Vulcaseal V286 is able to deliver the ideal protection, with full credentials whilst keeping the natural look and colour and able to overcome all the fears and trepidations that came as result of earlier technology that fell short of delivering the right results.

Battersea StationProject Overview
Sited within the massive Battersea Power Station site, this new build building acts as the hub for presentations to prospective clients and VIP visitors.
In view of the high profile nature of the redevelopment project of this iconic building the Battersea Power Station Development Company have a purpose built building from which to operate.
With Cleaning and Protection of Honed Limestone internal flooring causing an issue, Vulcaseal were contacted to propose a solution which was required in 24 hours. A combination of a surface clean using Vulcaseal DC139, an alkaline blend of surface active agents, it was able to remove all surface residue, and after rinsing the surface was protected with Vulcaseal V286, a surface impregnation treatment, that was surface dry within 30 minutes, and being water-based gave no application issues.
The resulting cleaned and protected floor was therefore achieved with minimum trouble.
